Emotions are the most definitive part of human brain functioning. Without proper emotional synchronization, the behavior, conduct as well as daily habits, cannot develop appropriately. However, no matter how important this virtue might be, no human is borne with the ability to control it. Emotions are abundant in every human being, but the art of managing them makes all the difference. The one who masters the art of self-regulation wins the race in the long run. Hence, knowing to control emotions and keep their projections balanced is of paramount importance for character building and overall growth.
Children, however, are not that good when it comes to self-regulation, and their emotions can swing randomly. One moment they could be all giggles and laughs, and the next in tears. Hence, it can be conferred that no individual comes with an inborn talent for managing emotions, but with certain objective practices, the skill can be surely mastered.
The key to healthy emotional self-management lies in the following practices which can induce a sense of healthy emotions in young minds:
When you find your child struggling with a certain situation, do not advise him/her to run away or turn back to the incidents. Instead, encourage them and offer them a supportive framework that would help them tackle the situation properly. This attitude towards problems turns out to be immensely beneficial for children and prepares them for managing and regulating themselves when any untoward situation arises.
When your child struggles to complete the homework or goes the wrong way in managing any task, do not scold. Rather, assist the child in getting the tasks done. This will help the kids realize that every work can be done if the right path is taken. They will never run from challenging tasks in the future. On the contrary, if you scold children for their inability to do anything, the feeling of insecurity will gradually seep into their tender minds, and they then tend to feel more vulnerable and helpless.
Healthy emotions refer to the ability to comprehend the other’s emotions. It is a virtue that leads a person to empathetic emotions. Therefore, if a child is guided well to become capable of managing emotions, it could turn out to be a positive thing for the family as well. A child capable of emotional self-regulation will always put the emotions of others before its own, and the family bondings will only grow strong in time.
When interacting with social peers, a balanced emotional approach always leads to a more cohesive solution or settlement of any issue. Even during can did conversations, the ones who master the power of emotional self-regulation land up winning the attention of the crowd. It has to be kept in mind that a good orator must be an attentive listener, too. And, this is what emotional self-regulation teaches a child. By listening to others, we not only pay attention but also show respect to their opinions which is a mutually enriching act.
Emotional self-regulation helps to nurture virtues like kindness, love, empathy, and resilience. It makes the mind stronger by making it less vulnerable to the stimuli of external forces. Therefore, emotional self-management also helps to keep the mental health of the children sound. The academic performance of the children also improves as their mental agility increases. Hence, both social and academic dimensions get augmented when emotional self-regulation is mastered.
