It is said that vocabulary is the pillar of language, and when it comes to writing skills, appropriate vocabulary has the strength to lend the write-ups a strong appeal and defined interpretation. Children are the ones with best cognitive powers and thus can be great learners of vocabulary. If vocabulary can be taught at the primary stages of learning, it surely improves a child’s overall command over a language. Hence, it is significant that we take care of the stock of words of the children to ensure they gain a strong grasp over the language. Let us discuss in this article some of the strategic ways to enhance the word power of children.
Whenever you and your child get some free time to spend together, read out a book of his/her choice loudly. Reading out loud automatically draws the attention of the child to the reading, and this way the words that he/she comes across but finds unfamiliar get added to the memory instantly. Surely, they will be asking the meaning of those words that they fail to recognize with their limited knowledge. Do not feel irritated or reluctant to offer them a good explanation every time. The more you will show eagerness in explaining the meaning; the more would be their curiosity to know new words.
When you decide to read a book to your child, give your little one the privilege to choose the book. If you select a book yourself which might not be of his/her interest, it might not draw the attention of the child resulting in a fruitless effort. If the book is chosen by the child, it would certainly claim the kids’ attention to the act of reading, and will thereby ensure introduction of new words to the kid.
Gift your children with little difficult books for their birthdays or any other occasion. While they would be reading the book, the words and the sentence structure will surely bother them. Ask them to refer to a dictionary as and when required to understand the meaning of the words they fail to comprehend at first glance. This would also get them introduced to the practice of going through a dictionary, which itself is a colossal storehouse of words. This way, the children would learn faster and in an enriching manner.
Keep communicating and interacting with your child during reading sessions. This will allow you to understand the level of comprehension of the child and the words with which he/she might be facing difficulty.
Do not always read out the books to your child. Instead, allow them to read the books themselves. When they would attempt to read the book, they would certainly come up with difficult words beyond their comprehension. Ask them to make a note of all those unfamiliar words and write down the meaning of them side by side. Later sometime, you can also ask your child to make sentences out of those words to ensure they learn the application part of the words as well.
Playtimes are the best to engage your child in word games and word puzzles. This ensures a brainstorming session every time for the child, and eventually, he/she would be introduced to more and more new words. This is a fun way of learning and enhancing vocabulary for children. Introduce at least one word every day to your child to ensure that he/she learns more than three hundred words a year which surely is substantial yet less tormenting as the learning takes over a long stretch of time.
